Harbour Excursion – Thursday, August 17, 2006

Harbour and Nature – that sounds first of all contradictory, but when examining the port’s landscape we will find in the centre of this technical environment an island of botanical beauty. Here we find a different kind of port that offers nesting sites to various birds. Here the main port of Hamburg appears surprisingly different.
This excursion takes 4 hours and connects topics of an universal port, by providing participants not only with background information about harbour industry, cranes, containers or the breeding birds in it, but also by demonstrating the relationship between these different parts, and showing the visitors topography and functional connections of a modern port. Visiting the wasteland, which should be protected, we try to give you an almost complete view of the structures of the port’s utilisation.
Furthermore, we take you past the terminals at the Waltershofer berth which is the busiest traffic junction of Northern Europe. Turning back to the city you shouldn’t miss the panoramic view of the port and all over the Elbe glacial valley from the Köhlbrandbridge.

For this tour a minimum number of 45 participants is required.
