The Institute of Avian Research "Vogelwarte Helgoland" (IfV) was founded in 1910 as the "Vogelwarte Helgoland" within the "Preussische Biologische Anstalt Helgoland". In 1947 it moved to Wilhelmshaven, where its headquarters have been situated ever since. The IfV has one satellite station, the "lnselstation Helgoland" on the Island of Heligoland, and the "Working Group for Population Biology" near Brunswick.

The IfV is one of the oldest and largest ornithological research institutions in the world. Since 1990 it has been under the direction of Prof. Dr. F. Bairlein.

Objectives
The function of the IfV is the scientific investigation of bird life. The focus of interest is the ecology of birds. Many findings derived from the basic research of the institute form the basis for successful nature conservation measures. In addition to this, the IfV is the ringing centre for the German Federal States of Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Northrhine-Westphalia and Hessen and is responsible for scientific bird ringing in these countries.
