Bird Ringing Station „Reit“

Destination: Bird Ringing Station „Reit“.

Short description: The bird ringing station „Reit“ is located in a 48 ha large nature reserve 13 km southeast of the conference building at the meeting point of two old tributaries of River Elbe. It is part of an old cultivated area and characterized by reeds, wet forests, and wet grassland. Since 1965, birds are trapped with mist nets from July to November. The station was part of the formerly „Mettnau-Reit-Illmitz network“ of Vogelwarte Radolfzell and is now co-operating with Vogelwarte Helgoland. Since 1973, more than 100,000 birds have been ringed. During the excursions, participants can watch bird ringing and visit the 350 m long mist nets.

Expected species (selection): Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Water Rail, passerines.

Return: 3 hours after departure.
Clothing: Depending on weather, clothing protecting from rain may be helpful. No rubber boots needed as excursion will keep to concrete paths, repellence.
Restrictions for disabled people: The ringing station is reached by a 300 m narrow boardwalk which is not suitable for wheelchairs.
